The most obvious instance that called for trust is when the Israelites encountered the Red Sea. However, even from the beginning, we see how they are invited to trust God when he leads them on the longer road, rather than the shorter one through Philistine country to Canaan. They were dressed for battle, but God knew they were not prepared to face down an enemy army at that time; his path was the best path for them.

God Loves What You're Doing

The scene of the Nativity, set among hay and humble beasts, fringed by scruffy shepherds with their meek lambs, drawn together at the center by the sweet affection shared between mother and child, fills our eyes with what would seem to be the very picture of peace. The setting seems far removed from any field of battle, the mood completely absent of conflict. Yet this child who in the manger lay, was God the Son entering the human fray.
